As much as it maybe attributed it to the truth, it is too simple a trigger for such a complex character. But the concept of home and family isn’t something solely based on blood, Lion shows us. It’s about care and memory and intentionality and, most of all, love. And love is something that the Brierelys shower upon Saroo—even though he doesn’t fully comprehend their motive for doing so.

After traveling on a train for quite some time, Saroo ends up in Calcutta. Saroo is not only frightened and alone, but he is also faced with having to scavenge and beg for food for his survival. He has no idea of his surname or the village he comes from which make it extremely difficult to find his way back home. Life is looking very bleak for, Saroo and he worries if he'll ever see his family again. All through his life he always worried about his little sister who he took care of since he was four years old.

While not constantly sniffling, he is wearing a poker face. Rooney Mara seems to be stuck in the meek character mode ofCarol , while playing Patel’s Indian food loving girlfriend. Essaying Patel’s mum is Nicole Kidman, who steals the show with the right amount of tears and adequate composure. Cleared payment cleared payment - opens in a new window or tab. As an adult, Saroo meets a fellow hotel-management student named Lucy, with whom he has a sexual relationship. They’re shown kissing and in bed together, clearly in a prelude to sex.
But inLion – intentionally or unintentionally – the childlike wonder and fear of a lost five-year-old matches the creative innocence of a foreign filmmaker. Even as Saroo is shown fascinated by orange kurta-clad saadhus at the Howrah Bridge, you can almost imagine the crew going starry-eyed behind the lens. At first, Peek was skeptical, he said this is only the 36th confirmed sighting of a mountain lion in Kansas, and the first ever in a city -- Wichita.

The memoir follows Saroo's life of poverty at home, to living on the streets of Kolkata, through to his getting adopted, and then on to his search for his family as an adult. Overall it is an uplifting story that pays tribute to Saroo's luck as much as his competency; it also give a huge nod to the power of acts of kindness. The book was co-written by Larry Buttrose, which may explain that even though the narration is very personalised, it feels distant. 8 out of 12, for the story itself, maybe a lot less for the writing. Saroo had become lost on a train in India at the age of five. Not knowing the name of his family or where he was from, he survived for weeks on the streets of Kolkata, before being taken into an orphanage and adopted by a couple in Australia.
(Read that, if you haven't.) Saroo tells his own story, and I think Buttrose has captured his tone and feelings well. Matt Peek, a biologist with the Kansas Department of Wildlife Research, said there's no doubt the animal was a mountain lion. Saroo woefully, almost tragically, misunderstands the nature of adoption—the beautiful bond between mother and child, biological or adopted. Saroo thinks Sue and John saw him as a bargain-basement substitute for a “real” son.

This is the stuff of parental nightmares, no matter which country of residence. But this situation was worsened by the limited circumstances of both the family and their nation. I haven't seen the movie, but the book was an emotional journey with a young five-year-old boy, who became a gentle giant with a mission in life. And they all lived happily ever after, and so did I.
There have only been a few dozen sightings of mountain lions ever in the state. There are also some difficult, conflicting messages offered about the adoption of people like Saroo—messages that may bother some viewers. But those messages are used to illustrate the much more positive message that Lion eventually lands on, which I’ll unpack more below. When I started reading the book, after the title attracted me to it, I was unaware of Saroo Brierley's true story. After finishing the book I discovered that the movie "Lion" with Nicole Kidman in his Australian mother's role was made. I realized for the first time how big his story really became.
In an orphanage later, a mentally ill boy, who’s terrified, gets dragged away by guards in the middle of the night. It’s unclear, but the boy seems to know and fear what’s coming, and I wonder whether perhaps his troubles stem from what happens during these midnight abductions. When he wakes up, the little boy feels the train move and rock beneath him. He looks out the window, sees the green and brown of India zipping past.
"I played it, and I had to look at it and think to myself, 'is it in my alley?' Because it was a mountain lion running down the back of the alley," Boyle said. A rare sighting of a mountain lion captured on Ring doorbell video had one Kansas resident shocked and a little scared. You see, there have only been a few dozen sightings of mountain lions ever in the state.
He asserted that he was five when he became lost. But in chapters 2 and 11, his siblings' ages do not concur. In the former, there's a gap of 9 years between him and Guddu, but in the latter, the difference is only 6 years. I find the childhood tales to be more plausible of a child older than 5 years.

Before long, Guddu’s carrying little Saroo in his arms, the little boy too tired to stay awake. When the two boys arrive at their town’s small train depot, Guddu gently places the boy on a bench, realizing that it was a mistake to bring him along. It won two BAFTA Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film was also commercially successful, making $140 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing Australian films of all time. I find it flipping amazing that 5-year old Saroo somehow managed to avoid any number of horrible situations while homeless and alone in Kolkata. To be adopted by a family in Australia truly was fortuitous.

They were the typical impoverished children with big tummys bloated from gas, thin and malnourished. The four of them lived with their mother, as their father had deserted them to take a second wife. Saroo’s responsibility was to look after his baby sister while their mother worked. Their two older brothers would try to find food, working for a few rupee in hopes of buying enough for a meal. For the most part, Saroo Brierley was a great storyteller.
